👍 Thumbs Up is one of the most-used emojis worldwide and one of the most misread. For most people over thirty it simply means yes, understood, fine. For many under twenty-five it reads as curt or passive-aggressive: an acknowledgement that closes the conversation without engaging.

This is the single most common source of emoji-related friction at work.

Safe as a message reaction. As a standalone reply to a younger colleague, adding a word alongside it avoids the cold reading.

The raised thumb reads as approval across the West – but in parts of the Middle East, West Africa and Greece it is an insult on a par with the middle finger. Travellers trip over this regularly.

There is also a generational split: among younger users a bare 👍 as a reply increasingly reads as curt or passive-aggressive, as though you want the conversation to end. People who mean it warmly tend to reach for 👌, ❤️ or an actual sentence. And the popular claim that the gesture comes from the Roman arena is not supported by the sources.
