👌 OK Hand

👌 OK Hand confirms that something is right or acceptable. It is also used to praise precision – a shot, a recipe, a piece of timing.

Straightforward in most contexts. Be aware the gesture carries an offensive meaning in Brazil and parts of southern Europe, and has been appropriated by some fringe groups, so it is worth reading the room.

The OK sign may be the most misread gesture there is. In North America and German-speaking countries it means “all fine”; in Japan it stands for money. In Brazil, Turkey and Greece the same hand shape is a coarse insult – a mistake US Vice President Nixon famously made in Rio in 1958 when he flashed it at a crowd.

Since 2017 a second layer has been added: an internet campaign framed the sign as a supposed “white power” symbol. What began as a hoax was then genuinely adopted by far-right groups, and the Anti-Defamation League added it to its symbol database in 2019 – explicitly noting that the overwhelming majority of uses remain entirely innocent.
