Nail Polish

The 💅 Nail Polish emoji belongs to the hands holding something, filed by Unicode under People & Body. In practice it comes up around bored, care, cosmetics and done. Unicode also files it under makeup, manicure, nail and polish, which shows how widely it is read.

Worth knowing: 💅 carries a second, informal reading. In chats it often means something other than the literal picture – our overview of double meaning emojis explains which one.

You can drop 💅 into chats, social posts, headlines or a bio. On SmileyZone it is filed under Gestures and Hands. The character has been part of the standard since 2010 (Emoji 0.6). Its code point is U+1F485. The emoji also comes in 5 skin tone variants, listed in the sidebar.

• A single 💅 is often enough to set the tone.
• 💅✨ – "I do not care, I am doing great." A conversational full stop.
• Often seen near ✍🏻 Writing Hand: Light Skin Tone, ✍️ Writing Hand and 🤳 Selfie.

The nail polish emoji turned into an attitude. In internet usage – originally from ballroom culture and drag, that is, queer Black and Latino spaces in New York – 💅 marks pointed indifference: “not my problem, I look fabulous”.

RuPaul’s Drag Race and later TikTok made that reading general. Anyone who sees only a manicure misses the entire tone.

• 💅✨ – "I do not care, I am doing great." A conversational full stop.

Easy to mix up with ✍🏻 Writing Hand: Light Skin Tone, ✍️ Writing Hand or 🤳 Selfie. They sit in the same Unicode subgroup and look similar at small sizes, so it is worth checking the name before sending.
