Whale

The 🐋 Whale emoji belongs to the sea creatures, filed by Unicode under Animals & Nature. Typical contexts are animal, beach and ocean.

🐋 fits messaging apps, social networks and anywhere a short visual cue helps. On SmileyZone it is filed under Emotions and Feelings. Added in 2015 with Emoji 1.0, it displays correctly on every up-to-date system. Its code point is U+1F40B.

• 🐋 on its own already flags the topic: animal.
• Fits messages about animal, beach and ocean.
• Often seen near 🫍 Orca, 🐬 Dolphin and 🐳 Spouting Whale.

Since Moby-Dick and the biblical story of Jonah, whales have stood for the incomprehensible. Since the 1970s the whale has also been the emblem of conservation: Save the Whales was among the first global environmental campaigns.

Online, “whale” means something else entirely: in gaming and crypto markets it denotes people who spend exceptionally large sums. The same metaphor – sheer size – with the opposite valuation.

• 🐋🐙 – Whale and Octopus
• 🐋🐡 – Whale with Blowfish
• 🐋🦭 – Whale plus Seal
• 🐋🫍 – Whale and Orca
• 🐋🐟 – Whale with Fish
• 🐋🪼 – Whale plus Jellyfish
• 🐋🐬 – Whale and Dolphin
• 🐋🐠 – Whale with Tropical Fish

Easy to mix up with 🫍 Orca, 🐬 Dolphin or 🐳 Spouting Whale. They sit in the same Unicode subgroup and look similar at small sizes, so it is worth checking the name before sending.
