🦄 Unicorn stands for magic and imagination, for standing out from the crowd, and – in business language – for a startup valued above a billion.

Common in playful profiles and children's contexts, and in tech reporting with a quite different sense.

The unicorn goes back to ancient travellers’ accounts of Indian rhinoceroses and was given a Christian reading in the Middle Ages: tameable only by a virgin, and therefore an image of Christ. Narwhal tusks were sold as unicorn horns for their weight in gold for centuries.

Scotland carries the unicorn on its coat of arms. In business language, unicorn has denoted a start-up valued above a billion since 2013 – chosen because such a thing was held to be similarly rare.
