The rainbow flag was designed in 1978 by the artist Gilbert Baker in San Francisco, encouraged by Harvey Milk. The original had eight stripes with assigned meanings – pink for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing and so on. Pink and turquoise were dropped for production reasons.

Since 2018 there has been the Progress Pride Flag, adding a chevron for trans people and for Black people and people of colour. Unicode adopted the flag in 2016.
