The peace sign was designed in 1958 by the British graphic artist Gerald Holtom for the Aldermaston march against nuclear weapons. It combines the semaphore signals for N and D – nuclear disarmament – within a circle.

Holtom deliberately declined to copyright it so that it could spread freely. Through the American civil rights and anti-Vietnam movements it became a worldwide symbol of peace.
