🤡 Clown Face is almost never about circuses. Applied to yourself it means "I made a fool of myself". Applied to someone else it is an insult: you are not being taken seriously.

Safe when self-directed, cutting when aimed at others.

Online the clown is a self-accusation: “I made a fool of myself”. Under someone else’s post it is a hard charge – it declares that person ridiculous.

The ambivalence runs deeper: the court jester was permitted to speak the truth precisely because nobody took him seriously. Modern coulrophobia, meanwhile, owes most to Stephen King’s It and the clown panic of 2016.
