The chat never leaves this device. The file is read and counted in your browser. At the end, only the list of emoji characters found is sent to the server to look up their names – no message text, no names, no file. Nothing is stored; reloading the page clears everything.

Only lines that WhatsApp writes as messages are counted. System notices (“… created the group”) are left out, and multi-line messages are joined together.
How to get the chat export
- Open the chat in WhatsApp and tap the name at the top.
- Choose “Export chat” – right at the bottom of the list.
- Pick “Without media”. Including media makes the file huge and adds nothing to the count.
- Save the file on this device and pick it above. On iPhone you get a ZIP archive – unpack it first, the _chat.txt is inside.
A chat history is the most personal thing on a phone – which is why nothing is uploaded here. The analysis runs inside the page that is already open; open your browser’s network panel and you will see no request at all while it counts. Only at the end does a list like ["😂","🥰"] go to the server to fetch the matching names.
Both the Android and iPhone formats are recognised, in German as well as English. What the count cannot do is read irony. A 💀 today means “I’m dying laughing”, not death – to find out how a character is meant, use the emoji wiki.
